Haus des Hörens
"A dream has come true!" The
Haus des Hörens was opened in Oldenburg with these words on September
20, 2002. And a dream it is, for this house is a common ground for
Oldenburg's hearing technology research.
Built by the Hörzentrum Oldenburg with the state of Lower Saxony lending its support, the Haus des Hörens offers excellent work conditions to its 25 current researchers. Undoubtedly one of
its kind in Germany, this unique building houses four different
institutions: Hörzentrum Oldenburg, HörTech Center of Competence (Kompetenzzentrum HörTech gGmbH), University of Oldenburg's Department for Medical Physics (Medizinische Physik) and Hearing Technology & Audiology (Hörtechnik und Audiologie), a study program offered by the University of Applied Sciences at Oldenburg/Ostfriesland/Wilhelmshaven.
Besides
attractive offices and bright lounge areas to facilitate communication, the
Haus des Hörens particularly offers its institutions quality
technical and acoustic resources: A total of 9 acoustic
chambers ranging from 3-29 cubic meters are available for implementing and measuring standard acoustic parameters, complex free-field
constructions and ERA/OAE apparatus. And that's not to mention
basic psychoacoustic research. We also have a
fully-equipped customization room (13 cubic meters) with an adjustment
system for all hearing aids currently on the market. Additionally,
our Communication and Acoustics Simulator (CAS) is another highlight this house has to offer!
Using a sophisticated technique consisting of countless microphones,
speakers as well as large-scale electronics, we have created a room in
which almost any other room can be acoustically simulated!
Hearing impaired persons can test the latest hearing aids there. In addition, we use this room to test mobile
phones for speech recognition under realistic conditions. On a more leisurely note, we invite musicians to play there while acoustically whisking the
audience away to the greatest concert halls of the world! The Haus des Hörens Society (Förderverein Haus des Hörens e.V.) sponsors these unique concerts, inviting the public to submerge into the fascinating world of hearing.
In May 2006, a theme park called the Hörgarten ("Hearing Garden") was initiated. All visitors are invited to experience complex hearing processes in a demonstrative way!
With the numerous business opportunities and leisure attractions we offer to impart the current state of hearing research, it is no wonder that the Haus des Hörens in Oldenburg hosts visitors on a weekly basis. If you would like to take a look at our facilities, feel free to contact us via telephone or e-mail.
